Losing Ground
Posted on 14 Nov 2011QATSICPP has produced a new report about the Child Placement Principle called Losing Ground: A report on Adherence to the Child Placement Principle. The report raises serious concerns about the placement of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children and young people away from their parents, extended family, community and country. It calls for immediate action to address this concerning situation.

Currently in Queensland, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders children and young people under the age of 18 make up 6.5% of the population yet our children and young people make up 37% of the number of children in care of Child Safety Services.
We all need to respond to this growing concern.

Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians

In December 2010, Prime Minister Julia Gillard appointed an Expert Panel on Constitutional Recognition of Indigenous Australians to lead a national conversation about making the recognition of Indigenous Australians in the Constitution.
Australia’s Constitution represents the values that define us as a nation. A lot has changed since the Constitution was written in 1901. You Me Unity is the national conversation about updating our Constitution to recognise our First People and their culture for the benefit of all Australians.
On 19 May 2011, the Panel released a discussion paper designed to be the starting point for a national conversation on constitutional recognition.
The discussion paper sets out background information about the Australian Constitution and how it can be changed as well as the potential benefits of constitutional recognition for all Australians.
Panel members want to talk directly to as many Australians as possible through national consultations.
Members of the appointed Expert Panel, Co-Chaired by Professor Patrick Dodson and Mr Mark Leibler AC. The Panel consists of 20 respected and accomplished individuals, including Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander and community leaders, constitutional experts and parliamentary members.

National Congress responds to the Department of Finance Strategic Review of Indigenous Expenditure.

Report Confirms Our People Need to Have a SayCongress Co-Chairs, Les Malezer and Jody Broun today responded to the Department of Finance Strategic Review of Indigenous Expenditure. They said the document confirms two important findings: firstly that our peoples must be involved in decision making and implementation of services for those services to be effective and secondly, that a new approach is needed built on flexibility and working in equal partnerships with communities. The Co-Chairs also said Congress must play a fundamental role in any new approach to decision making about services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Congress will now engage with members, Ministers and parliamentarians on a more detailed response to the issues raised in this report. Click here to read it. Qld NAICD State wide event announced for 2012
Posted on 09 Aug 2011On 4th August, QATSICPP Limited announced its plan at Parliament House, to hold a Brisbane, Qld state-wide event to celebrate National Aboriginal and Islander Childrens Day. The Honourable Phil Reeves, Minister for Child Safety pledged his support for the event.
While National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day is not a new concept, it is however, a new to plan for a Qld state-wide annual Event to be held in Brisbane commencing in 2012.
NAICD provides the opportunity to stand together, to show our children that they are valued, to celebrate their achievements, to build on their strengths and to support their endeavours. NAICD provides a platform for us all to contribute in developing and building a legacy for our children that:
- values their unique cultural heritage
- supports them to celebrate being children and young people
- recognises and celebrates their achievements and
- supports their families to keep them safe and well and help them grow up strong, proud and healthy.
SNAICC supports and encourages everyone to hold events and endorses QATSICPP’s plan for 2012.
